Cambodia closes NGO for discussing sex trafficking

By Okolo Onoamaka

Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Sen, on Tuesday ordered the closure of a Christian organisation which had discussed child sex trafficking with U.S. broadcaster, CNN, local media reported. Hun Sen told a group of graduating university students in Phnom Penh that California-based Agape International Mission had “insulted Khmer women’’ by discussing child sex trafficking in Cambodia, state-backed news outlet Fresh News reported. The July 25 report featured interviews with women who had been sold into prostitution as children by their parents in the village of Svay Pak, known as “Kilometre 11’’ or K-11’’ for its distance from Phnom Penh. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the village was infamous for its many brothels employing children, many of whom were victims of debt-bondage.

In recent years, Svay Pak has been cleaned up by police but Agape founder Don Brewster told CNN the industry had just been pushed underground. The Christian organisation, which has operated in Cambodia since 1988, was featured prominently in the report for its role in working with trafficking victims such as those from Svay Pak. Since airing last week, the Journalist Federations of Cambodia also attacked the report for its negative impact on “Cambodian women’s and children’s dignity as well as the reputation of Cambodia,’’ according to state news outlet Agence Kampuche Presse.

Liverpool Fans Give Thumbs-up to Standing Areas

By Okoh Blessing Efua

English Football fans pressing for standing areas to be re-introduced received a major boost on Monday when Liverpool supporters voted by a landslide majority for it to happen.
Fans of Liverpool before the preseason friendly match between Hertha BSC and FC Liverpool at Olympiastadion on July 29, 2017 in Berlin.
Their support is especially significant given the 1989 Hillsborough disaster which resulted in 96 Liverpool fans being killed in crushes caused by over-crowding in the Leppings Lane standing area.
In a week-long poll run by the club’s biggest independent supporters’ group Spirit of Shankly (SoS), 88 per cent of the nearly 18,000 fans who took part voted in favour of rail seating.
Rail seating can be flipped down or locked.     into an upright position, with safety barriers separating each row,
Clubs in England’s top two divisions have been legally required to have all-seater grounds since the measure was recommended by the 1990 Taylor Report into Hillsborough.
“It’s an incredible turnout, we aren’t aware of such numbers voting before,” said SoS chairman Jay McKenna in a statement.
“It demonstrates to us that we were right to have this discussion and that supporters, families and survivors want to have their say. After nine months of discussion, we have now had the vote and it will be taken as the position for Spirit Of Shankly.
“The size of the turnout majority means that no one can be in any doubt that supporters have had their say and made an informed decision.”
However, McKenna added further discussions should take place given the sensitivity of the issue to those who lost loved ones at Hillsborough.
“We say to anyone who is campaigning for this to understand sensitivities and respect the views of those who disagree,” he said.
“Those who have been through incredible heartache and tragedy have every right to be heard and to ask important questions about safety.
“It was important in our conversations to have these answered. It would be wise for that to take place elsewhere.”
The vote comes in the wake of last week’s approval of third tier English side Shrewsbury’s move to create a safe standing area, which would have a capacity of around 500, in their Montgomery Waters Meadow arena.
The Sports Ground Safety Authority gave their seal of approval last Wednesday.
Shrewsbury are looking to raise up to £75,000 (84,000 euros) to fund the cost of becoming the first all-seater stadium in England and Wales to introduce safe standing before the end of the 2017-18 season.
The Premier League recently wrote to its 20 clubs asking if they would be interested in taking part in a trial to reintroduce standing sections in their grounds.
Scottish Premiership champions Celtic last season installed 2,600 rail seats at Parkhead in a move that was considered a success.

Nigeria Has become Africa's Table Tennis Hub-Derek Abreta

By Okorho Ese Iroro

Ahead of ITTF Nigeria Open: Nigeria is fast becoming Africa’s table tennis hub, says Ghana’s Derek Abrefa.
The staging of the annual ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open ‘Lagos 2017’ coupled with the rating of its players among the best in the world, Nigeria is fast becoming the hub of table tennis in Africa, says Ghana’s Derek Abrefa.
Abrefa, who was voted the 2016 Ghana’s Table Tennis Star of the Year, believes hosting of the Nigeria Open has given more African players the chance to make it to the world ranking as well as improve their rating in the globe.
The 25-year-old University of Cape Coast undergraduate said: “I must say Nigeria is becoming the home of table tennis in Africa. But I must also say Ghana is also on the verge of becoming one of the top African countries that will first be mentioned when we talk of table tennis.          The Nigeria Open gives Africans the opportunity to meet world top table tennis players as well as give and expose African table tennis players on what the game is all about. Since most African countries are developing countries, most sports athletes don’t get the opportunity to be exposed outside the continental level to meet higher and experienced players due to inadequate support from the government.
And since Nigeria Open is a recognised ITTF tournament, it enables others who are battling with sponsorship issue to be able to participate and secure a good ranking in the world.”
The Ghanaian star is also not giving up on his team chances in Lagos, saying, “Ghanaians have prepared for this competition and I must say our efforts will pay us off well. Our target is to come and return back to Ghana with a medal. We stand a chance of winning a medal.
For his expectations in Lagos, he said: “My expectation for this tournament is to be able to move a step ahead of where I was in my last participation. I have prepared so well for this competition and all I hope and pray is that draw favours me also because in every competition, one needs to get a good place in the draw. I am expecting myself to put up a better performance.”
On African players’ chance, the Ghanaian number one said: “I am expecting Africans to fight for the ultimate prize since Europeans always defend every trophy that falls within their continent. We can make it and we must make sure we keep the trophy in Africa.”
